art for sale + books.

These paintings are now for sale at my etsy shop.
worms the tree would know

---

Books I read in February:
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
Tesla: Man Out of Time by Margaret Cheney
Hearts West: True Stories of Mail-Order Brides on the Frontier by Chris Enss

It was nonfiction month, I guess. I loved them all save for Hearts West, which was okay but maybe I wasn't in the mood. I've read another of Chris Enns' books, Tales Behind the Tombstones, and that one was pretty great. I was on an Old West kick at the time, though. Currently I'm more interested in science. And apparently people who shoot other people.

prints good! life good!

monster presents prints
Getting my first print order ready to go out tomorrow. Frankenstein's monster is my spokesmodel. I sold these through Facebook. No sales over at etsy, yet, but I added some more prints today anyway. (EDIT: shortly after this post, I made my first etsy sale!) Consider purchasing them.
rednoses
I have abandoned this painting but I'm going to get back at it soon.

Last night's episode of Taboo on National Geographic was about death, and it was fascinating. It also kind of confirmed for me that, while I still think about it from time to time, my decision not to go to mortuary school was the right one. Maybe because there are more interesting things people can have done with their remains than traditional burial or cremation. You can donate your corpse to Body Worlds, for example. I'd really love to go to one of these exhibitions.

There was another segment I was really interested in about South Korea's Coffin Academy, where people can go to experience what their funerals would be like in order to get a fresh take on being alive. This is probably as close to having something like Chicken Soup for the Soul as it gets for me.

Hello, February. I've been holed up painting and watching The X Files..all things going according to plan.

January book list:
Neuromancer by William Gibson
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest
The Road by Cormac McCarthy

All excellent and recommended.

no soup for you.

printsPrints! I'm conducting an experiment to see if people will buy them. I've already sold some through Facebook, so so far it's been a success. I'm looking into setting up an etsy shop here in the next couple of days as well. We'll see how that goes.

I've been out of commission since Friday. I have back troubles sometimes, you see, and spent most of the weekend curled up in the fetal position, watching the National Geographic Channel, wishing someone would make me soup so I wouldn't have to move. I ended up being that someone. Isn't that sad?

Also, the new CG Smokey Bear is fucking terrifying.

so far, so good

ohgodthesebandages
Working on this painting has been something between cathartic and mind-numbing. It's the bandages. I'd like to finish it tonight but my gnarled aching hand says no.

yodelling is good for the soulWell, we're halfway through January. The perception of time has been inconsistent for me so far this year. It feels like we should be well into February by now and it surprises me a little every time I realize we're not. Last weekend lasted about two weeks. Days speed up and slow down, I've lost some time completely and I think I spent a few hours in 2003 the other day. I don't know how to account for this. Alien abduction, maybe.

In other news, I had an interview for a job that I'm pretty sure I didn't get. I dropped a can of soup on my foot. I've been listening to old country music. I've watched Re-Animator like 20 times. 2010...so far, so good.

So, the job search continues, secret projects are in the works and an etsy shop is coming soon. A haircut as well. I think if I attacked my hair with styling products I could make it look exactly like a 'do Blanche once had on The Golden Girls. I have hair that was attractive on elderly women in the '80s. And with that thought, I'm out of here.

website + sketches

pray for brains: a little website I threw together. It's temporary until I can afford to get a domain and have the time to actually design something myself. I'm not incredibly fond of template sites, but this'll do for now. I want my own little corner of the web again, away from community and networking sites.

First sketches of 2010!

the old girl does jabber up a storm.

flowerswip
Yes, yes, plain old flowers. These are to be gifts for family this holiday season. I wanted to do something for a select few who are awfully supportive but don't exactly have a taste for "creepy/weird." So, flowers.

Mummyish. I don't know where all this pink keeps coming from.

I keep thinking about the episode of The Oblongs where Milo stops sleeping. The scene where he makes tea and crumpets in class. That is essentially me as of late, but with the added bonus of a lingering cold. It seems rare that I manage to stay asleep for more than three hours. Eventually I will flood the house to get some rest. In other news, earlier today a tree fell on our dog. He's okay--his trolley cable took the worst of the impact and he was just trapped under some lighter branches. So that was fun. First a tree fell on the neighbors' house, now this. What will be the trees' next victim? My car? Probably my car.

more of the same.

Except hey, look, she has a body. Part of one anyway. I'd like to finish her up tonight but I've been feeling under the weather since Thursday. I will be in bed drinking tea and watching season 5 of The X Files if anyone needs me.

november

This has been an incredibly long month of gloomy dawns, catching two or three hours of sleep whenever I can, trying to find a job that wouldn't require wearing a visor or khaki pants, trying to figure out what's wrong with my car, being a reliable expert in the happiness of others, Nikola Tesla, obsessing over my surroundings, countless cups of tea and occasional painting. And now this week the real craziness begins. Things to avoid this holiday season: the holiday season.

The series of mistakes I've been working on inbetween other projects and holding my own personal universe together. I finally had a chance to finish her up tonight. Her name is Agnes after a mystery woman whose mail sometimes ends up in our box. She gets a lot of Christian newsletters, this Agnes. This is the biggest painting I've done so far at 16x20. I think I could be pretty content just painting big horrible things but I have a lot of cute girls to get out of my system yet. I'm going to attempt to do that before the year is over, then I'm going somewhere else.

Farewell, October.

Halloween! I didn't do anything but hand out candy and watch movies, but I had a fantastic time. Mad Monster Party, Carnival of Souls, Eraserhead, Night of the Living Dead and a record number of trick-or-treaters. We weren't the only house in the neighborhood that decorated this year, either. One day we will infect the entire subdivision! Anyway. Here are the pumpkins I carved this year:

The wormhead one was fun. Some people thought the worms were tears, though, but these people were new. If tears looked like this I would cry all the damn time. In public. It'd be like my freshman year of high school all over again. Worms, people! Worms!

a sketch from tonight

Candy corn spiders! I've been sketching and watching horror movies all night. Lovely. It seems like I've been drawing a lot more lately than I had been. Probably it's the insomnia, or October, or both. It feels good.

Something of an experiment with colored inks.

Let's have no more nights.

Okay, blogging again. Let's go.
Some things I've been working on the past few days:
