a painting, a sketch & a sale.
its meaning fades
acrylic on canvas, 8x10.
This was commissioned by someone awesome who told me to just paint anything.
This was bound to happen...
In other news, I'm having a small sale at my Etsy shop. A couple of prints are on clearance, as well as some Halloween drawings. Some paintings have been reduced pretty low, too. So check that out!

october!
I'm not dead! Here's a sketch!
Haven't had as much time as I would like for Halloween artworks, what with school and its sinister time-sucking properties, but I am cooking up some small special things I hope to finish soooooon.

this is henry & that is good music.
Henry
Still working on my army of pumpkin people. A few more can be found in this flickr set, and a couple are up for sale in ye olde etsy shoppe.
I'm woefully behind on scanning my daily drawings. It's been over a hundred days since I started this project, and so far I've only missed one. So I've failed, really, but that's no reason to stop. The day I missed I was really into the paintings I was working on, and it just slipped my mind. The realization actually woke me up the next morning. It was very theatric.
Anyway.
I love a lot of old music. When drawing and painting, I often listen to pop standards, doo-wop, jazz--all that good stuff. Go to Pandora, click on create a new station, type in The Platters and you will get a constant stream of perfection.

new art + summer's last hurrahs.
Annnnd fall is on its way. We all know what that means, yeah? Halloween! I stopped by the dollar store the other day and was thrilled to be greeted by a display of plastic bloody body parts and little skeletons. Puts me in the best of moods, for my favorite time of the year is here. I never seem to have enough time to do as much holiday themed art as I'd like to. But this year, damn it, I'm going to make the time. It has begun with pumpkin people.

I'm going to try to draw as many of these guys as I can by the time October 31st rolls around. It's nice to have goals.
In other news, this is the last week before my grand return to college, full of enthusiasm in place of dread. I'm looking forward to getting on with things, but my eternal internal kid still groans at the phrase "back to school." I'm going to get the most out of these final days before most of my time is sucked away by higher education. Linguistics, physics, literary nonfiction, topics in film and Spanish: my life from September to December. But I'm ready!
Now, I have a cup of coffee to make peace with and fingers to abuse. Another in a series of nearly perfect nights.

possibly my very favorite thing.
It's this record, which I currently cannot actually listen to because the power cord for my record player vanished in the move but! youtube saves the day! My mom got this record and the book that came with it at school when she was a kid. By the time I came into the world it was long gone, but she had memorized the entire thing, voices and all. She used to recite the poems and stories to me when I was little. It made an impression. I found an absolutely pristine copy of both the record and book (in the original spooky Halloween bag it came in!) on ebay a while back and could've died, but instead of dying I showed it to Mom and she bought it for me for my birthday. And with fall on the way (yes!) it seemed appropriate to share.

Farewell, October.
Halloween! I didn't do anything but hand out candy and watch movies, but I had a fantastic time. Mad Monster Party, Carnival of Souls, Eraserhead, Night of the Living Dead and a record number of trick-or-treaters. We weren't the only house in the neighborhood that decorated this year, either. One day we will infect the entire subdivision! Anyway. Here are the pumpkins I carved this year:

The wormhead one was fun. Some people thought the worms were tears, though, but these people were new. If tears looked like this I would cry all the damn time. In public. It'd be like my freshman year of high school all over again. Worms, people! Worms!

painting with cat hair
I usually start decorating for Halloween in September. This year I didn't. I wasn't planning on doing so at all, but then put out a few decorations last night while everyone else was asleep. I should decorate in secret from now on. I got jump scares from two out of three family members this morning. Getting pumpkins for the carving this weekend.
